We believe everyone has the right to safe food. The Mars Global Food Safety Center strives to generate new scientific and technological insights to raise the bar on food safety.
Our Approach
We embrace our responsibility to help all stakeholders in the global food supply chain understand food safety risks and find new or improved solutions. We collaborate with global partners to increase food safety awareness through knowledge sharing, education, and training. Our global team conducts original, collaborative research using cutting edge approaches which are shared openly through scientific publications and forums.

We believe everyone has the right to safe food. Yet food safety risks are increasing at an unprecedented rate, and new threats and hazards keep emerging. Each year almost one in ten people in the world fall ill after eating contaminated food. Illness linked to unsafe food overloads healthcare systems and damages economies, trade and tourism. As the human population grows and climate change exerts pressure, it is critical we invest in food safety science and technology-based solutions.

The diversity of our team and the way we work together with our partners enables us to take a truly multidisciplinary approach to the complex food safety challenges we are addressing. Meet the Head of Food Safety Research and the Global Food Safety Center.
Dr. Yueju Zhao
Dr. Yueju Zhao is the Head of Global Food Safety Center at Mars Incorporated. She leads the team of food safety researchers, communicators, trainers, and operators based at the GFSC, Beijing. Dedicated to the capture and translation of new knowledge and scientific insight into novel technical solutions and practical capabilities, she ensures the Center remains a key node in our global scientific network that advances research in the area of microbial risk management, mycotoxin risk management, and food integrity management and provides training and capabilities to raise the bar in food safety. Yueju Zhao earned her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. She established a solid academic foundation, serving as Associate Professor at the Institute of Food Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and as a visiting scholar at Pennsylvania State University. Upon joining the Mars Global Food Safety Centre in 2019, Yueju rapidly advanced to the role of Senior Research Manager, where she leads research and development initiatives in food safety with a particular focus on mycotoxin risk control, seamlessly integrating scientific research into business objectives to deliver impactful solutions.
